January, 2015 - Our America Initiative supports Judicial Reform Delaware, a coalition of groups seeking various law changes to roll back the over-criminalization and judicial abuse problems in Delaware. Restoring justice entails support for a wide variety of bills, including HB 371 to remove criminal penalties for the possession of marijuana. Please email your legislators and sign the petition to advocate this change that would allow law enforcement to focus instead on crimes that actually involve violence or victims. For crimes remaining on the books, too often judges lack discretion in imposing sentences on the guilty. And the prisons to which the guilty are sentenced are overcrowded and notorious for mistreatment. Thus, we support the ACLU's prison and sentencing reform to release what the Cesar Rodney Institute estimates would include 1500 prisoners and save the government $50 million. We support another ACLU project to ensure police accountability, including ending the seizure of defendants' assets before they've been found guilty. To ensure whistleblowers and dissidents continue to expose government abuse that needs reform, we support safeguards for Free Speech, as well as privacy for our communication. You can email your state representatives and senators to ask them to support all these improvements in justice, and join the Judicial Reform Delaware coalition. With your donation now and input from our Advisory Councils on Civil Liberties and Over-Criminalization, we could advocate judicial reforms through more of our fifty state affiliates.
