December, 2014 - Our America Initiative supports Local Food RULES's advocacy with local governments to protect family farms from over-regulation. In states across the country local farmers and food sellers are stymied by heavy-handed raids from Agriculture and Food Inspectors, depriving consumers of access to affordable, healthy food options. Since 2011, eleven towns in Maine have passed the Local Food and Community Self-Governance Ordinance (LFCSGO), which protects traditional foodways and local rules for local food. It is a municipal ordinance that protects the right to save and exchange seed, and sell and consume local foods of one's choosing. Traditional foodways exempt from federal and state licensing and inspection include the direct sale of farm-raised food between one willing seller and one willing buyer so long as that food is intended for home use. Also exempt is food exchanged at community social events like church suppers, bake sales and holiday fairs.
