Ranked Choice Voting

August, 2016 - Our America Initiative supports efforts to make elections more civil and spoiler-proof, and endorses for the 2016 general election Maine's Question 5 to implement ranked choice voting. Ranked choice voting allows voters to rank candidates for elected office in the order of their preference, instead of being limited to choosing just one candidate. It's as easy as 1, 2, 3! Question 5 is endorsed by many Maine residents and the League of Women Voters of Maine. For more information, visit FairVote's "Spotlight: Maine."

Legalize Marijuana

July, 2016 - OAI supports any step to repeal the Drug War, including ending prohibition for marijuana - and endorses on this Fall's ballot "Question 1:  Legalize Marijuana Initiative".  Maine residents can click here to find out how to help, and anyone should sign OAI's petition to repeal national marijuana prohibition.

Local Food Freedom

December, 2014 - Our America Initiative supports Local Food RULES's advocacy with local governments to protect family farms from over-regulation.  In states across the country local farmers and food sellers are stymied by heavy-handed raids from Agriculture and Food Inspectors, depriving consumers of access to affordable, healthy food options. Since 2011, eleven towns in Maine have passed the Local Food and Community Self-Governance Ordinance (LFCSGO), which protects traditional foodways and local rules for local food. It is a municipal ordinance that protects the right to save and exchange seed, and sell and consume local foods of one's choosing. Traditional foodways exempt from federal and state licensing and inspection include the direct sale of farm-raised food between one willing seller and one willing buyer so long as that food is intended for home use. Also exempt is food exchanged at community social events like church suppers, bake sales and holiday fairs. The link above has talking points for any conversation or email with local officials or politicians in state government.  For additional information email Heather Retberg please at  Our America Initiative has assembled some of the nation's top experts on health, regulation and the environment at our Advisory Council; please consider a donation to to help us expand support for local food freedom through more of our fifty state affiliates.
