January, 2015 - Our America Initiative supports LB 643 (Garrett), the Cannabis Compassion and Care Act, to allow doctor prescription of marijuana for pain and nausea associated with debilitating diseases such as cancer, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS and hepatitis C. Since 1999 the National Academy of Sciences has recognized marijuana's therapeutic benefits, and half of the 50 states have ended prohibition for the plant when prescribed by a doctor. Please email your state senator to pass LP 643. To ensure medical marijuana passes, Omaha's chapter of NORML also has embarked on the collection of 125,000 signatures for the 2016 Nebraska Medical Marijuana Initiative, giving a patient the right to the plant after a recommendation from a state physician. Not only should people suffering disease have access to medically-prescribed cannabis, but the prohibition itself should end as well. Arresting 7,756 Nebraskans with marijuana citations in 2012 amounts to a total waste of tax dollars and tarnished reputations and opportunities for non-violent citizens. Thus we invite you to send an email to your Nebraska politicians to regulate and tax marijuana. You can sign also a petition to repeal marijuana prohibition nationally. With your donation now and input from our Advisory Councils on Civil Liberties, Over-Criminalization and Drug Reform, we could advocate drug reform through more of our fifty state affiliates.
