A Gallup poll last fall found that 58% of Americans support legalizing marijuana.  Medical cannabis is now allowed in 20 states and the District of Columbia -- and similar legislation is pending in at least six more states in 2014. Two states, Washington and Colorado, have legalized tightly regulated recreational marijuana use.

But where are the politicians?  Unfortunately, with too few exceptions, our Members of Congress and Senators are clinging to a failed Prohibition on the federal level.  And until the federal government acts to make marijuana use legal, the threat of prosecution will continue to cast a huge shadow over the efforts of the states to align marijuana laws with common sense, reality and compassion.

We MUST demand that Congress join the majority of Americans and a growing number of state legislatures and act to repeal a Prohibition that, like the alcohol Prohibition of the last century, has done nothing other than criminalize the personal choices of tens of millions of people and empower murderous cartels to supply a market for marijuana that isn’t going away. We also ask, again, that the President act under his existing authority to remove marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act and, by so doing, end the costly and unnecessary federal prosecution of simple marijuana use.
